About our Services

Georges Segal fine Arts provides different kind of services to cover a wide variety of purposes including, but not limited to, attribution and authentication, appraisal and valuation as a single item or as part of a collection, condition report, donation and succession, insurance, proposed buying and sale or just to know more about a painting or a drawing that you already own.

We work closely with collectors, museums and art market professionals. Georges Segal fine Arts had also worked with various auction houses in London and Paris for several years. Our appraisals and valuations are based on extensive research both in our own database and in other institutions. The outcome of our research will give you the opportunity to highlight and protect your collection.

The purpose of an appraisal

Appraisal, which sometimes can be a genuine investigation, should not be confused with valuation which required other skills such as a good understanding of the art market.

A lot of paintings are not signed. Therefore, we can attribute to an artist or a school. Attribution can be more or less certain, and the choice of the term used will enable to appreciate this degree of certainty. Appraisal is not an exact science. Art history evolves over time, so it is in the order of things to review and if necessary to update past appraisals.

Before being a picture, an old painting is a wood panel or a stretched canvas on which there are material, shapes and colours. We appraise paintings as objects in their own right by examining everything that makes it what it is. We also detect the possible restorations. This first step aim to ensure that the materials and techniques used are compatible with the presumed date of execution of the work or the artist's period of activity.

Then we analyse the picture. We identify the subject mater and sitters if these are unknown. We establish or confirm the authorship of the painting. We can also work on its history of ownership and exhibitions. We prefer to personally inspect the paintings and drawings but will review of course data and pictures sent by email.

Valuation

If appraisal is based on sound knowledge of art history, valuation involves to be quite familiar with the art market and to have strong analysis skills. In order to respond the most accurately to your needs Georges Segal fine Arts offers two types of valuations: market value* appraisal and insurance value** appraisal.

Our experience has shown us that this lack of distinction
could be a source of dispute in case of damage or succession. So the selected value to consider will also depend on the purpose for which the valuation is required.

Georges Segal fine Arts values your paintings or drawings in the domestic and international market to find the best valorisation area. The art market fluctuates like any market. So it is important to update valuations every five to ten years.

*The market value is the selling price
of the work on the art market at the time of the investigations.

**The insurance value corresponds to the "theoretical" replacement cost, considering that each painting or drawing are often unique works, that would have to be paid to replace it

Selling

We are always interested in acquiring paintings and drawings for our clients or to add to our own collection. Some works are best suited to offer through private transactions while others may benefit from the wider exposure that an auction house can provide.

Georges Segal fine Arts offers you three alternative ways of selling. As auction records are now available to anyone through internet the first two offer advantage the unpublished result independently of whether it is sold or unsold.

Make an outright purchase and provide an immediate payment with no charges;

Take works on consignment, finding the right buyer at the right price quietly and discreetly;

Providing you the best area (domestic or international) where you will obtain the highest price after assessing the quality of the work, its condition and its market value.
