FRANCIS COTES
London, 1726-1770

Portrait of a lady with two doves
circa 1760

Oil on canvas
30 ¼ x 24 ⅞ in. (77 x 63.2 cm)

Provenance:

Private collection, Bath (England)

Notes (by Benjamin Charron):
The way in which the features are painted was characteristic of Cotes in the 1760s, when he was closely emulating Sir Joshua Reynolds. The drapery, moreover, is reminiscent of Peter Toms at this time, an artist who worked for both Reynolds and Cotes.

The original or an alternative version can be found by Reynolds (no. 60 "Works of Art from Midland Houses" at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in 1953).

The history of the picture has been complicated by the fact that the sitter has been variously identified as Nancy Reynolds, Kitty Fisher or simply a Lady with doves, at various times in the past.

The composition seems to be inspired by Carlo Dolci's figure of Salome with the head of Saint John the Baptist in the Royal Collection.
